Airway smooth muscle cell (ASM) is renowned for its involvement in airway hyperresponsiveness through impaired ASM relaxation and bronchoconstriction in asthma, which poses a significant challenge in the field. Recent studies have explored different targets in ASM to alleviate airway hyperresponsiveness, however, a sizeable portion of patients with asthma still experience poor control. In our study, we explored protein phosphatase 2 A (PP2A) in ASM as it has been reported to regulate cellular contractility by controlling intracellular calcium ([Ca2+]i), ion channels, and respective regulatory proteins. We obtained human ASM cells and lung tissues from healthy and patients with asthma and evaluated PP2A expression using RNA-Seq data, immunofluorescence, and immunoblotting. We further investigated the functional importance of PP2A by determining its role in bronchoconstriction using mouse bronchus and human ASM cell [Ca2+]i regulation. We found robust expression of PP2A isoforms in human ASM cells with PP2Aα being highly expressed. Interestingly, PP2Aα was significantly downregulated in asthmatic tissue and human ASM cells exposed to proinflammatory cytokines. Functionally, FTY720 (PP2A agonist) inhibited acetylcholine- or methacholine-induced bronchial contraction in mouse bronchus and further potentiated isoproterenol-induced bronchial relaxation. Mechanistically, FTY720 inhibited histamine-evoked [Ca2+]i response and myosin light chain (MLC) phosphorylation in the presence of interleukin-13 (IL-13) in human ASM cells. To conclude, we for the first time established PP2A signaling in ASM, which can be further explored to develop novel therapeutics to alleviate airway hyperresponsiveness in asthma.NEW & NOTEWORTHY This novel study deciphered the expression and function of protein phosphatase 2Aα (PP2Aα) in airway smooth muscle (ASM) during asthma and/or inflammation. We showed robust expression of PP2Aα in human ASM while its downregulation in asthmatic ASM. Similarly, we demonstrated reduced PP2Aα expression in ASM exposed to proinflammatory cytokines. PP2Aα activation inhibited bronchoconstriction of isolated mouse bronchi. In addition, we unveiled that PP2Aα activation inhibits the intracellular calcium release and myosin light chain phosphorylation in human ASM.

RESEARCH QUESTION: Do different subtypes of superficial peritoneal endometriotic lesions exist, based on the presence and morphology of smooth muscle, collagen fibres and immune cell populations? DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study of 24 patients, from across the menstrual cycle, with surgically and histologically confirmed endometriosis. Immunofluorescence was used to delineate the CD10 stromal area of lesions (n = 271 lesions from 67 endometriotic biopsies), and then smooth muscle actin (SMA) positive tissue and immune cell populations (CD45+ and CD68+) were quantified within and adjacent to these lesions. Second harmonic generation microscopy was used to evaluate the presence and morphology of type-1 collagen fibres within and surrounding lesions. RESULTS: Overall, immune cell numbers and the area of SMA and collagen within endometriotic lesions tended to be low, but a spectrum of presentations significantly varied, particularly in the adjacent tissue microenvironment, based on lesion locations, the morphology of endometriotic gland profiles, or both. Lesions in which collagen fibres formed well aligned capsules around the CD10+ stromal border were identified compared with lesions in which collagen fibre distribution was random. Considerable inter- and intra-patient variability in the morphology of SMA and collagen was observed within and surrounding lesions. CONCLUSION: These data demonstrate considerable diversity in the presence of immune cells and morphology of SMA and collagen within, but even more so, surrounding endometriotic lesions, even within individual patients. This heterogeneity, especially within individual patients, presents a challenge to incorporating these cell and tissue types into any new endometriosis classification systems or prognostic approaches.

Neuroendocrine tumors of the small intestine (SI-NETs) often develop lymph node metastasis (LNM)-induced mesenteric fibrosis (MF). MF can cause intestinal obstruction as well as ischemia and render surgical resection technically challenging. The underlying pathomechanisms of MF are still not well understood. We examined mesenteric LNM and the surrounding stroma compartment from 24 SI-NET patients, including 11 with in situ presentation of strong MF (MF+) and 13 without MF (MF-). Differential gene expression was assessed with the HTG EdgeSeq Oncology Biomarker Panel comparing MF+ with MF- within LNM and paired stromal samples, respectively. Most interesting differentially expressed genes were validated by reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) in combination with validation of associated protein levels utilizing immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining of MF+ and MF- formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) patient samples. Overall, 14 genes measured with a 2549-gene expression panel were differentially expressed in MF+ patients compared to MF-. Of those, nine were differentially expressed genes in LNM and five genes in the stromal tissue (>2-fold change, p < .05). The top hits included increased COMP and COL11A1 expression in the stroma of MF+ patients compared to MF-, as well as decreased HMGA2, COL6A6, and SLC22A3 expression in LNM of MF+ patients compared to LNM of MF- patients. RT-qPCR confirmed high levels of COMP and COL11A1 in stroma samples of MF+ compared to MF- patients. IHC staining confirmed the enrichment of α-smooth muscle actin-positive fibrosis in MF+ compared to MF- patients with corresponding increase of COMP-expressing stromal cells in MF+. Since COMP is associated with the known driver for fibrosis development transforming growth factor beta and with a cancer-associated fibroblasts enriched environment, it seems to be a promising new target for MF research.

We previously established that vascular smooth muscle-derived adventitial progenitor cells (AdvSca1-SM) preferentially differentiate into myofibroblasts and contribute to fibrosis in response to acute vascular injury. However, the role of these progenitor cells in chronic atherosclerosis has not been defined. Using an AdvSca1-SM cell lineage tracing model, scRNA-Seq, flow cytometry, and histological approaches, we confirmed that AdvSca1-SM-derived cells localized throughout the vessel wall and atherosclerotic plaques, where they primarily differentiated into fibroblasts, smooth muscle cells (SMC), or remained in a stem-like state. Krüppel-like factor 4 (Klf4) knockout specifically in AdvSca1-SM cells induced transition to a more collagen-enriched fibroblast phenotype compared with WT mice. Additionally, Klf4 deletion drastically modified the phenotypes of non-AdvSca1-SM-derived cells, resulting in more contractile SMC and atheroprotective macrophages. Functionally, overall plaque burden was not altered with Klf4 deletion, but multiple indices of plaque composition complexity, including necrotic core area, macrophage accumulation, and fibrous cap thickness, were reduced. Collectively, these data support that modulation of AdvSca1-SM cells through KLF4 depletion confers increased protection from the development of potentially unstable atherosclerotic plaques.

BACKGROUND: Histological assessment of smooth muscle is a critical step particularly in staging malignant tumors in various internal organs including  the urinary bladder. Nonetheless, manual segmentation and classification of muscular tissues by pathologists is often challenging. Therefore, a fully automated and reliable smooth muscle image segmentation system is in high demand. METHODS: To characterize muscle fibers in the urinary bladder, including muscularis mucosa (MM) and muscularis propria (MP), we assessed 277 histological images from surgical specimens, using two well-known deep learning (DL) model groups, one including VGG16, ResNet18, SqueezeNet, and MobileNetV2, considered as a patch-based approach, and the other including U-Net, MA-Net, DeepLabv3 + , and FPN, considered as a pixel-based approach. All the trained models in both the groups were evaluated at pixel-level for their performance. RESULTS: For segmenting MP and non-MP (including MM) regions, MobileNetV2, in the patch-based approach and U-Net, in the pixel-based approach outperformed their peers in the groups with mean Jaccard Index equal to 0.74 and 0.79, and mean Dice co-efficient equal to 0.82 and 0.88, respectively. We also demonstrated the strengths and weaknesses of the models in terms of speed and prediction accuracy. CONCLUSIONS: This work not only creates a benchmark for future development of tools for the histological segmentation of smooth muscle but also provides an effective DL-based diagnostic system for accurate pathological staging of bladder cancer.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to describe a novel presentation of conjunctival smooth muscle hamartoma and review the histopathologic findings of this entity. METHODS: A 17-year-old African American adolescent boy presented with a pink, nontender lesion of the right bulbar conjunctiva that did not improve with medical management. He had no previous medical or ocular history. The lesion was excised. RESULTS: Histopathologic examination disclosed morphologically benign smooth muscle bundles within the substantia propria that stained positively for smooth muscle actin, vimentin, and desmin consistent with the diagnosis of a smooth muscle hamartoma. CONCLUSIONS: Although congenital smooth muscle hamartomas of the conjunctiva have been rarely reported in the literature, this is the first described case of a smooth muscle hamartoma presenting in adolescence in the bulbar conjunctiva. This lesion should be considered in the differential diagnosis for adolescents with similar appearing lesions.

AIMS: The variant p.Arg149Cys in ACTA2, which encodes smooth muscle cell (SMC)-specific α-actin, predisposes to thoracic aortic disease and early onset coronary artery disease in individuals without cardiovascular risk factors. This study investigated how this variant drives increased atherosclerosis. METHODS AND RESULTS: Apoe-/- mice with and without the variant were fed a high-fat diet for 12 weeks, followed by evaluation of atherosclerotic plaque formation and single-cell transcriptomics analysis. SMCs explanted from Acta2R149C/+ and wildtype (WT) ascending aortas were used to investigate atherosclerosis-associated SMC phenotypic modulation. Hyperlipidemic Acta2R149C/+Apoe-/- mice have a 2.5-fold increase in atherosclerotic plaque burden compared to Apoe-/- mice with no differences in serum lipid levels. At the cellular level, misfolding of the R149C α-actin activates heat shock factor 1, which increases endogenous cholesterol biosynthesis and intracellular cholesterol levels through increased HMG-CoA reductase (HMG-CoAR) expression and activity. The increased cellular cholesterol in Acta2R149C/+ SMCs induces endoplasmic reticulum stress and activates PERK-ATF4-KLF4 signaling to drive atherosclerosis-associated phenotypic modulation in the absence of exogenous cholesterol, while WT cells require higher levels of exogenous cholesterol to drive phenotypic modulation. Treatment with the HMG-CoAR inhibitor pravastatin successfully reverses the increased atherosclerotic plaque burden in Acta2R149C/+Apoe-/- mice. CONCLUSION: These data establish a novel mechanism by which a pathogenic missense variant in a smooth muscle-specific contractile protein predisposes to atherosclerosis in individuals without hypercholesterolemia or other risk factors. The results emphasize the role of increased intracellular cholesterol levels in driving SMC phenotypic modulation and atherosclerotic plaque burden.

Fibroadenoma and phyllodes tumor are the prototypical mammary fibroepithelial lesions (FELs). Recently, a subset of FELs, identified as stromal-epithelial lesion (SEL) with myofibroblastic stroma have been labelled as myofibroepithelial nodule (MFN). The MFN stromal cells are diffusely positive for SMA immunostaining and frequently show unusual histological features including irregular borders. There is limited literature on FELs with myofibroblastic or smooth muscle stroma. The etiology of the variation in the FEL stromal histology and its clinical significance is unknown. In this short report we describe clinicopathologic features of six FELs with myofibroblastic and/or smooth muscle stroma. We also report immunohistochemical overexpression of HMGA2 in 2 FELs that contained stromal smooth muscle differentiation suggesting a link to mammary myoid hamartoma. On limited follow up all the 6 FELs with myofibroblastic or smooth muscle stroma had benign outcome. The HMGA2 overexpressing FEL with smooth muscle stroma and myoid hamartoma of the breast show overlapping etiology, and histological features.

We explored the effect of thrombin on human aortic smooth muscle cells (HASMCs) and further analyzed its role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis (AS). Thrombin-induced differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in HASMCs were identified by analyzing expression profiles from the GEO. Subsequently, enrichment analysis, GSEA, PPI network, and gene-microRNAs networks were interrogated to identify hub genes and associated pathways. Enrichment analysis results indicated that thrombin causes HASMCs to secrete various pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, exacerbating local inflammatory response in AS. Moreover, we identified 9 HUB genes in the PPI network, which are closely related to the inflammatory response and the promotion of the cell cycle. Additionally, we found that thrombin inhibits lipid metabolism and autophagy of HASMCs, potentially contributing to smooth muscle-derived foam cell formation. Our study deepens a mechanistic understanding of the effect of thrombin on HASMCs and provides new insight into treating AS.

Cell therapies and tissue engineering approaches using smooth muscle cells (SMCs) may provide treatment alternatives for end-stage lower urinary tract dysfunction (ESLUTD). Myostatin, a negative regulator of muscle mass, is a promising target to improve muscle function through tissue engineering. The ultimate goal of our project was to investigate the expression of myostatin and its potential impact in SMCs derived from healthy pediatric bladders and pediatric ESLUTD patients. Human bladder tissue samples were evaluated histologically, and SMCs were isolated and characterized. The proliferation of SMCs was assessed by WST-1 assay. The expression pattern of myostatin, its pathway and the contractile phenotype of the cells were investigated at gene and protein levels by real-time PCR, flow cytometry, immunofluorescence, WES and gel contraction assay. Our results show that myostatin is expressed in human bladder smooth muscle tissue and in isolated SMCs at gene and protein levels. A higher expression of myostatin was detected in ESLUTD-derived compared to control SMCs. Histological assessment of bladder tissue confirmed structural changes and decreased muscle-to-collagen ratios in ESLUTD bladders. A decrease in cell proliferation and in the expression of key contractile genes and proteins, α-SMA, calponin, smoothelin and MyH11, as well as a lower degree of in vitro contractility was observed in ESLUTD-derived compared to control SMCs. A reduction in the myostatin-related proteins Smad 2 and follistatin, and an upregulation in the proteins p-Smad 2 and Smad 7 were observed in ESLUTD SMC samples. This is the first demonstration of myostatin expression in bladder tissue and cells. The increased expression of myostatin and the changes in the Smad pathways were observed in ESLUTD patients. Therefore, myostatin inhibitors could be considered for the enhancement of SMCs for tissue engineering applications and as a therapeutic option for patients with ESLUTD and other smooth muscle disorders.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an effective and cosmetically beneficial treatment of low-risk basal cell carcinomas (BCCs). To optimize PDT response, it is important to correctly select tumors. We sought to find markers that could identify such tumors beyond contributions from clinical and histological examination. Studies have shown that ß-catenin, E-cadherin, and α-smooth muscle actin (SMA) expression can indicate BCC aggressiveness/BCC invasiveness. We wanted to use these markers in an explorative study to investigate whether they were differently expressed among non-recurring compared with recurring BCCs, to evaluate their ability of predicting PDT outcome. Fifty-two BCCs were stained with antibodies against ß-catenin, E-cadherin, and α-SMA, and evaluated using immunoreactive score (IRS), subcellular localization, and stromal protein expression. Results showed that IRS of E-cadherin was significantly different among recurring compared with non-recurring BCCs and with area under a receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.71 (95% confidence interval: 0.56-0.86, p=0.025). Stromal ß-catenin expression significantly increased among recurring BCCs. Some recurring BCCs had intense expression in the deep invading tumor edge. In conclusion, E-cadherin, and stromal and deep edge ß-catenin expression were most prominent in BCCs that recurred post-PDT, suggesting they could potentially predict PDT outcome. Further studies are needed to investigate whether these results are of clinical value.

We document the frequency and morphological and immunohistochemical features of inclusion bodies in uterine smooth muscle cells in 56 (76%) of 74 investigated pet rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus). Inclusion bodies began to appear at the age of 2 years and their frequency increased with age (P = 0.047, r = 0.33). They ranged from 5 to 20 µm in diameter, were slightly basophilic to amphophilic with well-delimited oval bodies in haematoxylin and eosin-stained tissue sections and formed in the cytoplasm of the uterine smooth muscle cells with displacement of the cell nuclei. The inclusion bodies were positive with periodic acid-Schiff, Best's carmine, Lugol's iodine and Grocott's methenamine silver methods. They were immunoreactive to a monoclonal antibody raised against human polyglucosan and negative with monoclonal antibodies for several intermediate filament proteins. Electron microscopy revealed that they were non-membranous structures composed of electron-dense amorphous material. The morphological, histochemical, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural features of the inclusion bodies in the rabbi uteri were similar to those of human polyglucosan bodies (PGBs). PGBs appear to occur at a high frequency in the uterus of rabbits, which are known to be susceptible to uterine diseases.

OBJECTIVES: Interpreting small biopsy specimens or fine-needle aspirations of gastrointestinal tract (GI) smooth muscle lesions may be challenging when the differential diagnosis includes leiomyoma vs muscularis propria (MP). We evaluated the utility of S100 staining in distinguishing GI leiomyomas from MP. METHODS: A search was conducted in our laboratory information system for cases of leiomyomas arising within the GI tract (2004-2021). Site-matched controls containing MP were selected (2018-2020). Five high-power fields (hpf) were counted on S100 immunohistochemical stains by two pathologists in the resections and by three different blinded pathologists in the biopsy specimens and analyzed. RESULTS: The median S100 count was 2.5/5 hpf in leiomyoma resection cases (n = 38), which was significantly lower than the median count of 548/5 hpf in MP (n = 19) with a P value of <.0001. The median S100 count in biopsy specimens (n = 16) was 1.2/5 hpf and within the expected range of 1 to 104/5 hpf (minimum-maximum value) established by the leiomyoma resections. S100 counts in the normal MP were significantly higher than those observed in leiomyomas (P < .001). CONCLUSIONS: S100 staining can aid in distinguishing a leiomyoma from MP in the GI tract, which is especially helpful when evaluating cases with limited sampling.

Leiomyoadenomatoid tumors of the epididymis are exceedingly rare biphasic tumors composed of an adenomatoid component in the form of gland-like structures lined by single flat or cuboidal cells admixed with smooth muscle. Radiological and gross findings cannot distinguish leiomyoadenomatoid tumors from the more common classic adenomatoid tumors or leiomyomas, and careful microscopic examination is critical in the identification of this esoteric variant. The histogenesis of this entity remains ambiguous. Common hypotheses include a collision tumor, a variant of an adenomatoid tumor with a smooth muscle component, or an adenomatoid tumor arising in the background of reactive smooth muscle hyperplasia. We present 2 cases of leiomyoadenomatoid tumors with diffuse nuclear WT1 positivity in both the adenomatoid and smooth muscle components, supporting the mesothelial origin of these tumors.

BACKGROUND: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common cutaneous malignancy and may show various differentiations. The possible pluripotent stem cell lineage of BCCs, whose origins are controversial today, is thought to be the main reason for the different morphologies. The aim of the study is to evaluate the expression of some neuroendocrine and smooth muscle markers of differentiation in BCCs and investigate the relationship between histopathologic subtypes and recurrence. METHODS: A total of 128 cases diagnosed as BCC in our center were included. Immunohistochemical studies of CD56, synaptophysin, chromogranin-A, smooth muscle actin (SMA), desmin, caldesmon, and Ki67 were applied. RESULTS: CD56, chromogranin-A, and synaptophysin immunoreactivity were detected in 77.3%, 13.3%, and 0.8% of the cases, respectively. 78.1% showed SMA positivity while no tumor expressed desmin or caldesmon. A correlation between histopathologic recurrence risk groups and CD56 expression was found (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: CD56 and SMA immunoreactivity is present in the majority of BCCs. However, the available findings do not support neuroendocrine or smooth muscle differentiation. CD56 antigen can be used for prognostic purposes in detecting high recurrence risk tumors. After the investigation of the expression rates of these two antigens in different cutaneous tumors, it may be appropriate to use them for diagnostic purposes in BCCs.

Rationale: Pediatric obesity-related asthma is a nonatopic asthma phenotype with high disease burden and few effective therapies. RhoGTPase upregulation in peripheral blood T helper (Th) cells is associated with the phenotype, but the mechanisms that underlie this association are not known. Objectives: To investigate the mechanisms by which upregulation of CDC42 (Cell Division Cycle 42), a RhoGTPase, in Th cells is associated with airway smooth muscle (ASM) biology. Methods: Chemotaxis of obese asthma and healthy-weight asthma Th cells, and their adhesion to obese and healthy-weight nonasthmatic ASM, was investigated. Transcriptomics and proteomics were used to determine the differential effect of obese and healthy-weight asthma Th cell adhesion to obese or healthy-weight ASM biology. Measurements and Main Results: Chemotaxis of obese asthma Th cells with CDC42 upregulation was resistant to CDC42 inhibition. Obese asthma Th cells were more adherent to obese ASM compared with healthy-weight asthma Th cells to healthy-weight ASM. Compared with coculture with healthy-weight ASM, obese asthma Th cell coculture with obese ASM was positively enriched for genes and proteins involved in actin cytoskeleton organization, transmembrane receptor protein kinase signaling, and cell mitosis, and negatively enriched for extracellular matrix organization. Targeted gene evaluation revealed upregulation of IFNG, TNF (tumor necrosis factor), and Cluster of Differentiation 247 (CD247) among Th cell genes, and of Ak strain transforming (AKT), Ras homolog family member A (RHOA), and CD38, with downregulation of PRKCA (Protein kinase C-alpha), among smooth muscle genes. Conclusions: Obese asthma Th cells have uninhibited chemotaxis and are more adherent to obese ASM, which is associated with upregulation of genes and proteins associated with smooth muscle proliferation and reciprocal nonatopic Th cell activation.

BACKGROUND: Atherosclerosis is an arterial vessel wall disease characterized by slow, progressive lipid accumulation, smooth muscle disorganization, and inflammatory infiltration. Atherosclerosis often remains subclinical until extensive inflammatory injury promotes vulnerability of the atherosclerotic plaque to rupture with luminal thrombosis, which can cause the acute event of myocardial infarction or stroke. Current bioimaging techniques are unable to capture the pathognomonic distribution of cellular elements of the plaque and thus cannot accurately define its structural disorganization. METHODS: We applied cardiovascular magnetic resonance spectroscopy (CMRS) and diffusion weighted CMR (DWI) with generalized Q-space imaging (GQI) analysis to architecturally define features of atheroma and correlated these to the microscopic distribution of vascular smooth muscle cells (SMC), immune cells, extracellular matrix (ECM) fibers, thrombus, and cholesteryl esters (CE). We compared rabbits with normal chow diet and cholesterol-fed rabbits with endothelial balloon injury, which accelerates atherosclerosis and produces advanced rupture-prone plaques, in a well-validated rabbit model of human atherosclerosis. RESULTS: Our methods revealed new structural properties of advanced atherosclerosis incorporating SMC and lipid distributions. GQI with tractography portrayed the locations of these components across the atherosclerotic vessel wall and differentiated multi-level organization of normal, pro-inflammatory cellular phenotypes, or thrombus. Moreover, the locations of CE were differentiated from cellular constituents by their higher restrictive diffusion properties, which permitted chemical confirmation of CE by high field voxel-guided CMRS. CONCLUSIONS: GQI with tractography is a new method for atherosclerosis imaging that defines a pathological architectural signature for the atheromatous plaque composed of distributed SMC, ECM, inflammatory cells, and thrombus and lipid. This provides a detailed transmural map of normal and inflamed vessel walls in the setting of atherosclerosis that has not been previously achieved using traditional CMR techniques. Although this is an ex-vivo study, detection of micro and mesoscale level vascular destabilization as enabled by GQI with tractography could increase the accuracy of diagnosis and assessment of treatment outcomes in individuals with atherosclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Odontogenic cysts and tumors exhibit different degrees of aggressiveness in their biological behavior. There has been evidence that the presence of myofibroblasts (MFs) at the invasion front promotes tumor invasion. Our study is based on the fact that MFs are important in the biological behavior of odontogenic cysts and tumors. AIM: To assess immunohistochemically expression of alpha-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) of MFs in odontogenic cysts and tumors and correlate this expression to their biological behavior. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The archival tissues collected for 1.5 years were obtained from the Department of Oral Pathology & Microbiology, People's Dental Academy, Bhopal (India). A total of 40 cases consisting of 10 cases each of odontogenic keratocysts, radicular cysts, dentigerous cysts and ameloblastomas formed the study group. An immunohistochemical analysis of α-SMA expression and localization was carried out. RESULTS: Mean MF counts were the highest in odontogenic keratocysts which was followed by ameloblastomas, entigerous cysts and radicular cysts. Weak α-SMA-expression was found in 50% of cases, moderate in 22.5% of cases, and intense - in 10% cases. MFs were arranged in the spindle, focal, or network patterns in 35; 27.5 and 20% of cases, respectively. CONCLUSION: The analysis revealed that the MFs were distinctly heterogeneous in distribution and pattern of arrangement. This provided persuasive evidence that stroma of these lesions harbor MFs as reflected by α-SMA immunopositive cells.
